A delegation of people with disabilities to Sheich Jarach

שגיא יודוביץ מתוך הבלוג של שגיא יודוביץ'

The concept behind this delegation is that people with disabilities are a weakened group in society.  As a weakened group of people, they can identify with other groups of people such as women, homosexuals, afro-americans and in our case - the Palestinians. Recently I have been forming / organizing groups that would visit families in Sheich Jarach who have been expelled from their homes. As a weakened group we have the power to give a better interpretation for the lack of justice caused to other groups by the authorities. Many people don't understand what do people with different disabilities have in common.  For me as well, this is a new perspective. Many people consider disability a medical problem and not a social variation. The difference between a medical problem and a social variation is that if one talks about a disability caused by a medical reason, he would try to heal it or disregard it.  But when one talks about social variation, he treats this group as a sub-group whose members have a common denominator.

The sub-group has emblems and things in common. They share mutual problems to cope with and they consider themselves excluded from the ordinary society.

Therefore, having initiated a group of people with disabilities, I also announced that this group is a sub-group of Israeli society. At the same time, I also asked other weakened groups to recognize us as such. As previously noted, many people are very upset about our general view that we are a sub-group in society. Many years ago I took a course on feminism which was conducted in the Hebrew University. If not mistaken, this has been in 1994 or 1995. One time I spoke out loud about the similarities between social problems of people with disabilities and those of women. One student shouted at me: "How can you compare between these two situations?." This event made me to think that perhaps there is no room to compare between the two. Last year when I met Israel Seiks from Turning Points and he talked about the similarities between weakened groups, such as women and people with disabilities, I found out that this is not my far-fetched idea, but that there are very sensible people that think so, as well. When I found out that there are university faculties who deal with this specific idea, I gathered the courage to make this ideological idea public.

During last summer, a group of extreme Orthodox Jews had gained legal rights from the State of Israel to settle in Arab homes at Sheich Jarach. But the Arab families have been struggling to get their homes back. They live in tents inside the neighborhood and the whole time are in constant conflict with Jewish settlers.

These are the families that I wish to visit. My plan is to bring in the Israeli and foreign media to create massive feedback.

It's extremely important for me to say that I'm truly sad that I haven't initiated a similar group for Gush Katif, before the disengagement process.

I hope that God will help me make a connection between people with disabilities and other weakened groups in society.
